Last week and upcoming races
Last week I competed at the Grand Valley State Univeristy’s Big Meet on Friday. They just built a state of the art 300m facility last year, that is only an hour and a half away from Kalamazoo. I started off running the mile trying to get a good hard effort in and then come back to try and keep a steady pace for the 5k, 45 minutes later. In the mile I went out hard in 2:02, then came back in a rough 2:10 to finish off tying my indoor personal best of 4:12. In the 5k I was able to keep it pretty even coming through the mile in 4:34 and two miles in 9:09, I didn’t quite finish the way I wanted to, but in the end I got what I wanted out of both races.
Coming up I am running the 5k on Friday, March 5th at the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame where I am hoping to improve on my PR of 13:52. Notre Dame’s indoor facility is one of the best in the country and this is always one of the fastest meets of the year. And after feeling good during my pacing at Notre Dame 2 weeks ago, I am looking forward to going the full distance. The following week I will be traveling to Jacksonville, Florida for the Gate River Run which is also the USATF 15k championships. Last year I finished in 27th place in 45:36 in a very deep field. This year has 3 former Olympians and 10 of the top 14 finishers from last year’s race, so it looks to be just as competitive. The past four months of my training has been pointing to these two weeks of racing, and I am very excited the way my training has been shaping up.
